* 2010 is already well into its second half! SP is celebrating 60 years of excellence in education! Various celebratory events have already been held. The first of these was the Fred Coker FunRun/Walk on 30 January. The next one is the 60th Anniversary School Dance. This will take place on Friday 6 August at the school hall. Tickets cost R60 each. Bring your own food and drink. Keep watching this site, as well as the Alumni site at www.spalumni.co.za.
* One of the special events taking place later this year (we are targeting September) is the publication of a 60th anniversary edition of Speak Up, the magazine. We invite all ex-students to submit either an article or merely some reflections on any significant memories they have from their time at SP in one or more of the following categories: academic, sport, cultural, social and political. Photographs are welcome. Contributions may be emailed to speakup.sp@gmail.com, with the subject line ‘Speak Up’. All submissions should be in by 31 August 2010.

- Farewell to the Cloetes: The SP community bade a sad farewell to Mr Oscar and Mrs Rusdia Cloete on the last day of the second term. Mr Cloete joined the staff in 1999 and Mrs Cloete in 2002. The Cloetes are starting a new life in New Zealand. SP wishes them well.

- Ice-Skating Club Outing: On Tuesday 8 June the ice-skating club visited the arena at the GrandWest Casino Complex. As usual there were plenty of thrills and spills but fortunately there were no serious injuries and the ice stayed in one piece. Click here for more photos.

- SP and the World Cup: Our school continues to shine on the global stage, in front of an audience of billions. Two of our students were chosen to act as ballboys in the first match (France vs Uruguay) at Cape Town Stadium, while another will be one of the flag-bearers at the semi-final on Tuesday 6 July. Hopefully in four years time one of our students will feature for Bafana Bafana in Brazil! Also, our jazz band, all girl rock band Ellipsis, as well as R&B band Eminence all passed rigorous auditions to perform at the Cape Town International Convention Centre as part of the Global Icons/Cool Britannia Event for the duration of the World Cup. The bands would support international acts at these all-day themed parties. Initially the idea was for successful bands to perform for about five days but the organisers were so impressed by our bands that they were booked for fifteen days. Unfortunately the event was cancelled after about a week because of poor support, with the result that the overseas visitors were deprived of the chance to hear our bands. Nevertheless, this proves yet again what talent we have at SP.
- Farewell to Great Sankey Visitors: On 4 June SP bade farewell to the visiting contingent from our sister school in Warrington, Cheshire, in the UK. Two teachers from Great Sankey High School, Mr Paul Eager and Ms Jo Foster, and four students had spent a week at the school interacting with the SP community. At the assembly a joint musical item was rendered by the visitors and the SP contingent consisting of Ms Avril Smith and Ms Diane Gordon and students Ryan Swartz, Nabeelah Sambo and Jody Metcalfe, who had visited Great Sankey about two months prior to this. - NSTF Awards: SP gained yet another accolade on 4 May when it was presented with a Certificate (known as a Brilliants Award) for being the top performing Dinaledi school (Mathematics and Science) in the Western Cape in 2009, based on the Matric results. Ms Deidre Bastian represented the school at the glittering Awards ceremony held in Pretoria. The National Science and Technology Forum encourages research in Science, Engineering and Technology, and presents annual awards to individuals and institutions who have made significant contributions in their field. The event was hosted by the Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor, and one of the keynote speakers was world-renowned paleontologist Professor Guy Berger, who spoke about the use of nanotechnology in his branch of Science.
- SP’s Science Expo: The Grade 10 - 12 Physical and Natural Science students presented their research projects in the Hall in preparation for the Provincial Schools’ Expo to be held later in the year. The Science teachers would decide which projects were good enough to be entered. Click here for more photos.

- History Students Visit: On Thursday 25 March the History students were treated to an outing to the Mayibuye Centre at the University of the Western Cape by Mr Ivan Leedenberg. Visits to the Centre, which houses material relating to the apartheid era and the struggle for democracy in SA, are particularly important for students today, who have no personal experience of our country’s darkest days. Click here for more photos.

- Inter-house swimming gala: This event continues to grow in leaps and bounds (or should that be dives and splashes?). Once again a record number of participants took to the pool at Wynberg Baths on Wednesday 24 March 2010, and for the first time a water-polo match was added to the programme. The gala was won, as it was last year, by Kendal, with Protea in second place, followed by Azalea and Mimosa. For more photos, click here.
