THE ARGUS QUIZ 2010
The 2010 edition of the Argus Quiz commenced on Monday 3 May. Every Monday teams from schools across the Peninsula did battle with each other. In June, just before the exams, the first round ended, and the first 36 teams on the log entered the knock-out stages in the third term. During the quiz, points were awarded for each correct answer, and deducted for each incorrect answer. Log points were awarded according to the position the team achieved at the end of the day’s round.
SP was represented by 3 teams, namely:
Team A (below l-r): Lauren de Waal, Aminah Majiet, Ashlee Prins, and Mariam Harnekar.
Team B: Kathryn Jacobs, Aashiq Parker,Sameega Basadien and Nithaam Ryklief.
Team C (below): (back) Kristi Overmeyer, Nazneen Dalvie, Jamie-Lee Jackson, (front) Tasneem Cassiem and Zara Bell..
After the round robin stages of the 2nd term, qualifying teams participated in the quarter-finals. Semi-finals and finals would be held at the Waterfront during the third term.
By the end of the first stage, all three teams had qualified for the knock-out stages.
The Knock-outs
The first round of the third term was not a good one for SP. Both Team B and C were knocked out, leaving only Team A to continue the fight.
In the second round SP’s A Team were pitted against Bergvliet, Athlone and Westridge High Schools. After a slow start SP surged ahead and stayed there, comfortably winning the round. SP had 77 points to Bergvliet’s 37, with Athlone and Westridge bringing up the rear.
The A Team survived a tough battle in the quarter-final, finishing in second place, but still qualifying for the semi-finals.
These were held on Saturday 14 August at the BMW Pavilion in the Waterfront. The gala event was hosted by radio personality Jeremy Harris and the quiz master was Gasant Abader, Executive Editor of the Cape Argus. One of the adjudicators was SP Alumnus Peter Rhoda, managing editor of Independent Online.
SP was drawn in semi-final 2, along with teams from Livingstone, Iqra Academy and Muizenberg High. At the halfway stage SP was in joint 3rd place with Iqra, but by the end of the 40 questions the team was in 4th position. The girls in the team were naturally disappointed, especially since they had known all the answers but just had not pressed their buzzers quickly enough. Hopefully they will all enter again next year. Nevertheless, the team can take heart from the fact that they reached this far after 69 teams had entered, and, by virtue of their placing, that they had won R500 each, as well as R5000 for the school.
The eventual winners were Belgravia, achieving the feat for a remarkable third year in a row.
