ATHLETICS AT SP
As stated in the History section, athletics has been an integral part of SP virtually since its inception. The inter-school competition and, especially, the inter-house competition have been important building blocks of the SP ethos, with discipline and participation being key.
The inter-house competition and inter-house rivalries are arguably the main talking points whenever ex-students meet. The second week of the first term of every year sees the start of eliminations and practices as the build-up to the two competition days gains momentum. But the real excitement begins already on the first Friday of the year when the grade 8s and other new students are placed into their houses - the houses that they will be part of for the rest of their lives. Below are some photos of the 2009 Grade 8s waiting to be placed, and then being told where to go.

“ Where will I end up ... Mimosa, Kendal, Azalea or Protea?”

Senior student Nicole Gomez with Protea’s hope for the future. A-Z-A-L-E-A ... but those blue bags will have to go!

Ein, zwein, drein, mit a yak, yak, yak! Mr Paul Slater telling the new Mimosans what they’re in for!
The next part of the process involves getting the field ready. Mr Cloete, some teachers and student volunteers spend a good part of the first Saturday laying the track. Here they are in action.

Mr Peter Baumgartner and Mr Celso Mhlati making sure the long jump take-off board is secure!

Reward for a hard day’s work!
