REPORT – FOURTH TERM 2009 AND FIRST TERM 2010
Our boys play in the midweek league, which is played according to the 21-over format, where each bowler is limited to 3 overs and a batsman has to retire when he has scored 25. The knock-out is played according to the 20-20 format. Some of our midweek games are also, by mutual agreement, played in 20-20 format. The u/19s also took part in a schools’ tournament at the end of the third term. This report appears elsewhere.
U/19
Owing to a number of factors, such as byes, inclement weather, and non-fulfilment of fixtures, the boys played only a few matches, with mixed fortunes.
In the only match played in the fourth term SP beat Steenberg in a 20/20 match by 39 runs. SP batted first, scoring 145/3 in their 20 overs. Top scorer was Nathan Pitts with 57, while captain Robin Gow-Kleinschmidt score 26 not out and Yusuf de Wet 22.
Steenberg could only manage 106/9 in their 20 overs. Yusuf de Wet was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for 21 in 3 overs. Stuart Minnies also bowled well, taking 3 for 11 in 2 overs.
The first game in the new year was the first round of the knock-out competition. SP had a tough fixture, drawn against eventual losing finalists Rondebosch Boys. SP won the toss and bowled first. They started off well, taking 4 early wickets - Justin Seale taking 2, with Stuart Minnies and Nathan Pitts taking 1 each. Rondebosch’s middle order then consolidated, and eventually RBHS reached the respectable, if not spectacular, score of 138/7.
Although SP got off to a reasonable and solid start, tight bowling and poor shot selection saw our boys reaching only 98/6, with only opener Wasfie Price (34) and Nathan Pitts (26) reaching double figures. Rondebosch therefore won by 40 runs.
SP’s first league match was against Grassy Park at home. Playing 21 overs a side, SP scored 140/7. Top scorer was Laeeq Paulsen with 26 retired, with Mikaeel Galant (23) and Wasfie Price (20) also doing well.
Grassy Park scored 119, with Mikaeel and Laeeq being the pick of the bowlers. SP won by 21 runs.
The next fixture was against Spine Road, played at Eisleben Primary on 23 February. In grey, overcast conditions SP batted first, scoring 145/3 in 18,5 overs. The rain, which was falling lightly virtually throughout the innings, fell ever harder, and the umpires were reluctantly forced to abandon the game. Laeeq top scored with 31 retired, while there were very good contributions as well from Robin (28 retried), Mikaeel (27 retired) and Nathan (24).
The last game was against Princeton High at home. Again SP batted first, totaling 150/9. The main scorers were Mikaeel (29 retired), Faiez Adams (24) and Wasfie (22). Princeton reached for 133/5 in their 21 overs, with the wickets shared between Nathan, Robin, Faiez and Wasfie. SP won by 17 runs.

This team’s only game in the fourth term was against Noordhoek (away). SP batted first, scoring 78, with Laeeq Paulsen, playing in his last match in this age group, top scoring with 25 retired. Noordhoek made the score, losing 8 wickets in the process. The main bowler was Laeeq, who took 4 for 8. Andrew Firth took 2 for 12. Noordhoek thus won by 2 wickets.
The first game in the first term of this year was a first round knock-out fixture against Dar-ul-Islam. The opponents batted first, scoring 120 for 4. No bowler really excelled for SP. We replied with 115 all out. Keenan Alben (47) and Fawwaaz Basadien (35) batted very well but with 5 ducks and no one else scoring double figures, their efforts were not good enough. SP lost by 5 runs.
SP then played Spine Road in a league match. SP batted first, scoring 105/9 in 20 overs, with Keenan top scoring with 35. Spine Road were bowled out for 90, with Keenan taking 3 wickets, and Fawwaaz Price and Fawwaaz Basadien each picking up 2. SP won by 15 runs.
SP played Fairmount in the next game. SP batted first, scoring 138/8 (21 overs). Once again Keenan (31 retired) and Fawwaaz Basadien (25 retired) were the best batsmen. Fairmount came very close, scoring 136 for 9. Chad Elliot was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets. SP won by 2 runs.
Fish Hoek were the next opponents. Yet again SP batted first. They amassed 143/3 (21 overs). The two Fawwaaz’s (Basadien and Price) opened, scoring 29 retired and 25 retired respectively. Omar Rejaldien (24) and Keenan (23) also batted very well.Although they lost only 5 wickets, Fish Hoek could score only 65 in their 21 overs. Fawwaaz Basadien took 2 wickets, with Chad and Omar taking 1 each. SP won by 48 runs.
SP again batted first against their next oppponents, Grassy Park. SP scored 152, with Keenan (33 retired) once again top scoring, while Fawwaaz B. (24) and Omar (25) also continued their good batting form. Grassy Park could only muster 97 in reply. Keenan (4 wickets) and the two Fawwaaz’s (2 each) were the best bowlers. SP won by 54 runs.
The final game was against Phandulwazi, who batted first, scoring 136/5. There was no single outstanding bowler. SP won this match by 3 wickets, with Keenan yet again providing the backbone of the innings with 25 retired. There were also good contributions from Omar (19) and Chad (17).
So once again the pattern seems to have been followed , with both teams remaining unbeaten in the league matches, but failing in the knock-out competition.
