Prefect Workshop: Traditionally, when a new set of prefects is chosen, a workshop is organised, the main purpose of which is to enable them to get to know each other better. This is done because they are chosen from different classes. From the beginning the ideas of teamwork and mutual support are emphasized.

The session on this particular day was broken into two parts, namely ice-breakers, co-ordinated by Mr Ivan Leedenberg, and the presentation of collages depicting their likes and dislikes, co-ordinated by Mr Barry Saunders. Unfortunately time did not allow for the completion of the collages, so this will be done at a later stage at a second workshop.

Below are more photos of the workshop.

Wortelgat Camp: The campsite, in Stanford near Hermanus, is situated on the banks of the lagoon - a beautiful setting. The purpose of the camp is to develop the prefects’ leadership skills and their trust in each other and to learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, and where there are weaknesses, to overcome them. Some very challenging tasks were set for them, such as blindfold ‘skiing’, forming human ladders (with some blindfolded) and building rafts and stretchers in order to rescue an ‘injured’ team member from a platform in the middle of the lagoon. The report below was written by Vinette Petersen, one of the prefects. Here are a few photos of the camp. Click here to go to the photo gallery.

On the days building up to our departure for Wortelgat, I remember some prefects (including myself) not indulging in the excitement felt by the rest, mainly because we didn't know what to expect. To me, "leadership camp" meant endless lectures and boring team building exercises about being and becoming a great leader.

But our expectations and what we experienced were two absolute contrasts. There were, of course, the occasional talks on how to strengthen our teams and ourselves, but every single word was beneficial to us all. Not only the much appreciated lessons from our awesome coordinators, but especially the inspiring words from one prefect to the next.

Then there were the "pre-dreaded" team building activities that turned out to be the purest of fun! These activities not only left us with aching muscles and foul odours, but also definitely strengthened our prefect body in terms of trust, communication and unity. Already on the second day were these newfound qualities instilled.

It's safe to say that the highlight for everyone was getting to know one another on a basis of friendship instead of just as peers. And even better was getting to know the people behind the once oblivious faces that moved past us at school for nearly five years. In a matter of three days people who have never spoken before have become the best of fiends. It was really heart-warming to see these bonds forming right in front of me.

The most memorable occasion would probably have to be the last night round the camp fire where old childhood games were played, interesting stories and hilarious jokes were told and the air was saturated with laughter and the intimacy felt by all. Many of us also took the opportunity to test our self-acquired insomniac skills’.

On this camp there was never a dull moment. and I'm sure that if we could, we would definitely go back for round two.’
