Curriculum

The following sports are available to SP students in 2008

Athletics

No.1 on the alphabetical list and no.1 in terms of mass participation, the inter-house and inter-school competitions still start the new year with a bang of activity and excitement. Mimosa are the current champions, pipping Kendal by 3,5 points, with Azalea (last year’s winners for the first time in 26 years!) in third and Protea a distant fourth. SP is challenging Steenberg and Mondale ever more vigorously for the position of top school in the region. Cleo Overberg, Keisha Wentzel, Terri Cozett, Nuraan Samodien and u/14 star Nabeelah Parker were selected for the provincial side.

Badminton

Steadily growing in popularity. Grade 9 student, Sarah Jampies is a provincial player.

Baseball

Another sport growing in popularity. Spencer Diedericks and Chad Adams are two of the outstanding players.

Basketball

Mischka

Growing in leaps and bounds (literally and figuratively) among boys and girls. Dean Williams and Mischka Prinsloo are among the top boys and Verenique Anyster, Marché Daniels and Tarryn Warren are the outstanding girls.

Chess

Our team continues to do well. Our top players are Ahmed Saheb and Chadley Lary.

Cricket

One of the established sports. We have two teams, u/15 and u/19. Outstanding players in the first term were Blake Parks, Ridah Isaacs and Lindsay O’Malley (u/19) and Nathan Pitts, Wasfie Price and Yusuf de Wet (u/15).

Cross-country

This sport serves as ideal winter training for our middle and long distance athletes. Outstanding athletes are brother and sister Hussain and Nabeelah Begg.

Fishing

George Gabriels, a Grade 8 student, has recently started this club. It already has a few committed members.

Golf

A sport rapidly growing in popularity at SP. We play in the High Schools' Golf League. Abduragmaan Price and our first girl player, Latiefah Holliday, have attained Western Province colours.

Hiking

An enthusiastic and hardy group, under the leadership of teachers George Grey and Karen Dreyer-Stempels, endured the first severe winter storms in May while overnighting on Table Mountain.

Hockey

This code has had its ups and downs. Presently, we have a girls’ team, with Jurene Rosen one of the driving forces. SP boasts current SA captain, Bruce Jacobs, among its alumni.

Ice Skating

This club has regular sessions at the rink in Goodwood under the guidance of Mr Ivan Leedenberg.

Netball

Ever popular among the girls. We entered teams in the schools league, as well as in the Action Netball League. Crissando Jacobs, Arlene Erasmus and Marché Daniels are some of the outstanding players

Rugby

This sport has experienced a resurgence in recent years. We have an u/15 and u/16 team entered in the WP Schools’ league competition.

Soccer

Still a popular sport. We have an u/14 and u/18 boys’ team playing in the league. Two of the key players are Cruz October and Jade Mesias (who unfortunately for the school, has just emigrated to New Zealand. Perhaps we’ll see him playing for the Kiwis in a few years time!). Our girls’ team has also been going strongly for quite a few years. From humble beginnings they are now a force to be reckoned with. Zainab Davids and Kayla Richards were awarded provincial colours last year.

Softball

With a number of committed and enthusiastic players, this sport is rapidly growing in popularity

Swimming

Although we still do not have our own pool, the annual inter-house gala is still a popular event. Nabeelah Diedericks and Jason Wilson have both represented their clubs at provincial level. See the photo gallery for the 2008 gala.

Table Tennis

Another very popular sport, at which our students consistently do well. Our teams, a boys’ and a girls’ team, are always hard to beat. Darren Rodgers, our top player, has represented South Africa at all junior age levels. Sulayman Salie and Lindsay Segers have represented Western Province, as has Candice Stuurman, our top girl. Lizandra Hector is also a player with potential.

Tennis

This sport has been growing at a feverish pace, since the school has acquired its own courts in Elfindale. Sandy Cupido is a player of tremendous promise.

Volleyball

This has been one of the most popular sports at SP for a long time, and continues to be so. 2 teams (a boys' and a girls') play in the schools’ leagues. Nicole Gomez is a current junior national player.
